“I don’t think she’s as okay as she’s trying to get us to believe,” I tell Gabriel as we make our way up the stairs to our floor. “I think she’s freaking out, but doesn’t want us to know that.”

“What makes you say that?” he asks, frowning. I don’t know if he believes me or not, but I appreciate that he’s willing to listen to what I have to say.

“I know you don’t know what it’s like to be a beta, obviously, but one of the things we’re good at is sensing what people are feeling. Just a glimpse. I think it’s because we’re meant to be the caretakers.” I shake my head. “Something was just off about her energy.”

Gabriel is quiet for a moment. “Maybe she’s just feeling a little overwhelmed?”

“Are you talking about Bree?” Brody’s head suddenly pops up between me and Gabriel.

I nod. “You sensed it too, didn’t you?”

“Yeah, something was definitely off. If she’d just been tense, I would agree with Gabriel, but it’s more than that. Her hand was shaking when she handed out the roses. It wasn’t much, but it was enough for me to notice.”

We make it to the second floor and step into the living room, where the other suitors have gathered. Everyone is murmuring amongst themselves. I know everyone is freaking out over what happened with Wren. I know I never expected him to react that way. I sensed nothing violent about him. We can only guess what caused his reaction, as there will be no answers coming our way now that he’s gone.

I’m glad he’s gone.

Brody sighs. “Knowing that something is off doesn’t mean we can bother her, though. If she was hiding it from everyone, then she obviously didn’t want to lean on any of us.”

“True. She has only known us for two days. Of course, she isn’t ready to let us in yet. But I hate that she felt the need to hide it not just from us, but from her friends.”

Someone’s hand comes down on my shoulder, startling me. Turning, I find Onyx with a sad smile on his beautiful face. “I overheard your conversation. You need to remember, Bree is used to pushing down her omega side, so she doesn’t appear weak to her business associates. That isn’t an easy habit to break. Not to mention, if we didn’t see Wren being the type to react this way, then neither did she. She’s hurt and probably doubting her judgment.”

“You might not say a lot, but you’re always paying attention, aren’t you?” I ask him.

He nods. “I speak when I have something to say. You’ll learn, beta.” He runs a hand down my cheek, my eyes falling shut of their own accord as I fight back a shiver. “It’s okay to worry about Bree, but don’t let it eat you up inside. She will learn to trust us, of that I have no doubt.”

Onyx brushes his thumb over my lip as he nods to the other two men, and then he’s walking away.
